Playoff Bound in 2026-2027? A New York Rangers Off-Season Review

Could this finally be the year?

With the DCHL Draft and Free Agency (mostly) in the rearview mirror, it's time to start thinking about the 2026-2027 DCHL season. For the New York Rangers, there's reason for optimism heading into the new campaign; the blueshirts young core is growing and they hope to transition from rebuilding club to a playoff bound one in the up-coming season. Let's take a look under the hood of the Rangers and check in with their plan heading into another season:


You Get a Trade, You Get a Trade!

New York General Manager and Vice President of Hockey Ops Mark Ramos has had a very busy summer, making a total of 10 trades dating back to May 28th. Many of those moves were aiming to improve the team right now as opposed to focusing on the future. The Rangers have acquired Valeri Nichushkin, Fabian Zetterlund, Tomas Nosek, Adam Gaudette and Danila Yurov and that's just the forwards. The club also acquired defensemen Hampus Lindholm and Emil Lillieberg this summer as well.

"We truly feel we have a young core here on the verge of the postseason," Ramos told DCHL.ca. "They can't do it alone though so we wanted to make sure they have talented players to play with too."

That core, highlighted by young stars Logan Cooley, Logan Stankoven, Matvei Michkov, Dustin Wolf and Artyom Lenshunov, is hoping to take a significant leap in the Metro division this season. Last season, the Rangers brought in Mika Zibanejad and spent significant draft capital to acquire Adam Fox to augment their young players. That, of course, wasn't enough for a playoff berth in a competitive Eastern Conference. Could the flurry of trades this summer help matters in 2026-2027?

"Our fans have been very patient during this rebuild," Ramos said."They deserve playoff hockey this year. We hope to give them that in 2026-2027 and beyond."

Free Agency was "Defensive"

With the Rangers forward group set, the front office spent a lot of time looking for upgrades on the defensive end. The aforementioned Fox, Levshunov and Jamie Drysdale already man the right side of the defense so it was imperative that New York address the left side of their defense if they plan to compete.

In recent seasons, it has been somewhat of a revolving door at the position and the organization hopes that new additions' Ryan Shea and Brian Dumoulin help bolster the unit on the second and third pairs. Shea inked a three-year deal, while Dumoulin has signed up for one season in New York. They are expected to skate in pairs with Drysdale and Levshunov, respectively. 

Metro Boomin(?) 

The Rangers remain in a strong division and that’ll make their pursuit of a playoff spot all the more difficult. The Flyers are the defending Eastern Conference Champions and remain a quality team. The Islanders and cross-river rival Devils aren’t far behind. Moreover, the Blue Jackets and Penguins possess enough talent to remain competitive as well. The Hurricanes and Capitals are in the throes of rebuilds, but appear to be heading in the right direction.
