Las Vegas, Nevada (AP) –
One of the most exciting days of the year is upon us with the 2024 DCHL Entry Draft taking place today. In Nashville it makes it more exciting as its one of the first times in team history they’ll be selecting in today’s draft. It’s been close to a month since the Predators hired new general manager Neil Burkholder. It’s been a quiet month, and eerily quiet some pundits have said.
Well yesterday the Predators made their first move in his tenure by picking up veteran defenseman Morgan Rielly from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for defenseman Luke Schenn, prospect forward Easton Cowan, and the 47th overall pick in todays draft.
“We felt like we needed a more steady power play quarterback defenseman and Morgan Rielly is a perfect fit for us. He is signed at a reasonable contract and brings a dynamic that our blueline currently doesn’t have.”, said GM Burkholder.
Rielly played with the Washington Capitals last year scoring 51 points in 82 games (9G-42A) with a -17 rating. The longtime Minnesota Wild player has probably found a home in Nashville for the foreseeable future. When asked if any other moves are on the horizon?
“We’ve had discussions about some of our players, but we feel like we’re solid in net with Bobs and Anthony, we think our defense is pretty much set, but we do need some secondary scoring in our top six, but we’re not going to mortgage our future to get it. We’ll do it slow and steady.”, said Burkholder.
For todays draft strategy we asked what is their plan?
“Well right now we’re slated to be picking 15th overall, and we’re in that sweet spot where we can take the best player available or maybe even trade down. I don’t think we’re in the position to trade up right now. We’ll see what happens and take the best player available to us. Our scouting staff is ready and pumped for this moment and we’re excited to get into the Sphere.”, said Burkholder
