The Carolina Hurricanes earned a hard-fought 4–3 overtime victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night at the American Airlines Center, with Filip Forsberg scoring the game-winning goal just 1:24 into the extra frame.
It was a balanced offensive effort for Carolina, with goals from Derek Ryan, Chandler Stephenson, and Vincent Trocheck in regulation. Rasmus Dahlin led all skaters with two assists, continuing his impressive early-season form from the blue line.
“It was one of those games where we had to stick with it,” head coach Peter Laviolette said postgame. “Dallas played a heavy game, but our group stayed composed and made plays when it mattered. Forsberg’s finish was exactly what you expect from a guy like him — calm, confident, and clutch.”
The Hurricanes struck first early in the opening period, when Ryan deflected home a pass from Dahlin just 2:54 in. After Dallas tied it midway through the frame, Carolina regained the lead on a power play when Stephenson buried his first of the season at 13:04.
Carolina extended its lead to 3–1 early in the second period as Trocheck converted another setup from Alex Tuch and Brayden Point, but Dallas stormed back with goals from Jamie Benn and Seth Jarvis, including the tying tally with just 11 seconds left in regulation.
In overtime, Forsberg sealed the win on a quick passing play from Tuch and Zach Whitecloud, snapping a shot past Stars goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood for his fourth of the year.
Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic was once again steady for the Hurricanes, making 33 saves on 36 shots to improve his record to 3–1–1.
“We’ve been in so many one-goal games lately,” Nedeljkovic said. “It feels great to finally get rewarded for all the hard work the guys are putting in. These kinds of wins build momentum.”
Carolina’s special teams were a difference-maker, going 1-for-2 on the power play and a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. The Hurricanes also blocked 11 shots and recorded 28 hits in a gritty road performance.
With the win, Carolina improves to 3–3–2 on the season and looks to continue its climb in the standings. The Hurricanes return home next week to host the Vegas Golden Knights at PNC Arena on Tuesday.
